Obidos Lagoon - Silver Coast - Portugal Summer 2010
If last year we saw the sandy beach of Foz Do Arelho drastically reduced, this year we run the risk of no beach whatsoever…not that we don’t have more than enough options of other beaches, but its still a drag for the locals, like myself!
The problem has been that the mouth that connects the lagoon to the ocean has been moving North and currently finds itself practically on top of the Foz cliff. As the Obidos Lagoon is considered a World Heritage symbol and is vastly protected by all environmentalists, authorities have been very careful in any steps taken to artificially alter the lagoon’s state.
The Ministry of Environment has now guaranteed that the lagoon will have a new mouth before the Summer. With this, on the 21st April the current mouth was closed, after many truckloads of sand a stone were used to cover it up. The theory is that the lagoon needs time before another mouth can be opened in order for this one to settle. This all sounds good for anyone worried about where to set their towel down for some sun.
